10 Things You Can Do While at Home During the Coronavirus Pandemic

The rapid spread of the Coronavirus has not only led to school closures, but also cancelled concerts and group events. Experts are advising everyone (even those without signs of illness) to self-quarantine and practice social distancing in an effort to prevent spreading the virus further. While some schools have decided to continue instruction through an online format, students may still find themselves with more free-time than normal.

To help everyone make the most of this time - and to combat any boredom you may experience - we've compiled a list of suggested things you can do while at home to remain productive:

1. Complete assignments and study. This may seem obvious, but now is a great time to catch up on readings, review content from earlier in the semester to prepare for finals, and to study for standardized tests like the LSAT, MCAT, SAT, or ACT.

2. Read a few books. Since it can be difficult to find time to read for leisure during the semester, take this time to read a few books of interest to you. Also, be sure to check out Mint's available eBooks located under the 'Ivy Resources' tab!

3. Catch up on your sleep. Now is a great time to make sure that you're getting the recommended 6-9 hours of sleep each night. Be sure to not oversleep, or sleep-in, since this can mess with your body's natural sleep schedule.

4. Practice self-care. Meditate for 20 minutes, do a face mask, deep condition your hair, paint your nails, take a bubble bath... now is a great time to focus on you!

5. Exercise. Even though gyms have closed, you can still go to YouTube and find workouts that can be completed at home. Take this time to try something new - maybe Yoga or a HIIT routine.

6. Learn a new language. Download Duolingo (or go to YouTube) and start learning a language - or two - that you've always wanted to learn.

7. Catch up on TV shows/watch movies. Maybe you had to put your favorite show on hold to focus on your schoolwork. Now you have time to pick up where you left off! Or, maybe there's a movie you've been meaning to watch. Now's your time to snuggle on the couch and enjoy it!

8. Clean and organize your spaces. Has dust been piling up on your dresser for the past two months? When is the last time you vacuumed or swept the floor? Take this time to clean and organize your spaces. It may also be easier to focus in a clean environment once you begin studying again.

9. Reflect. Take this time to reflect on yourself, your future, your goals, etc.

10. Develop a new hobby. If you don't know what else to do, form a new hobby and try something you've always wanted to try. Bake a chocolate cake, complete a 1000 piece puzzle, paint some mountains on a canvas, cook a new recipe, or learn how to sew...

Self-quarantining and social distancing are necessary precautions to help stop the spread of the Coronavirus, but they don't have to be boring just because you can't leave your home. Try one, or all, of the suggested things on the list and let us know what you've tried!
